Vertical blinds usually gather a lot less dust than horizontal blinds. But they do need a good cleaning once in a while. When you notice a build-up of dirt and dust on them, remember it is time to give them a refreshing look!

Things to Remember

Before washing vertical blinds, make sure you double-check the material it is made up of. If it is fabric, plastic, or vinyl, you can remove the dust and stains by soaking them into the water and wash either by hand or using a machine. However, it would help if you never soaked the wooden blinds at all.

Sometimes, even the manufacturer’s note might help you understand whether your blinds can be washed in a machine or if they require any special care at all.

First Things First: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Here are certain tools that can assist you in washing vertical blinds appropriately:

  • Vacuum cleaning with a soft brush
  • Some Microfiber cloths
  • Mild dishwashing liquid
  • Lukewarm water
  • Light scrub or sponge
  • Also, an open surface where you can dry the blinds once washed. Note that a flat area works better for the blinds to maintain their shape as they dry off.

Well, if you are cleaning your blinds for the first time, it might seem tricky to understand where to start.

Luckily washing vertical blinds is fun and easy! The whole cleaning process may take a few hours, from removing the blinds to drying them off, but the good news is that you only have to repeat this process once every few months.

Dust-Off and Remove Blinds

Start by closing the blinds and lowering them fully. Hold the bottom end of the blind in one hand and quickly dust them off with a microfiber cloth or a soft dusting brush starting from the top and wiping your way down.

Now, remove them from the headrail by unhooking them and lay them out flat. As you finish removing the blinds from their headrails, give your headrails a swift cleaning stroke to wipe off the dust using the microfiber cloth or duster.

Wash Blinds

Since there is no dust left on your blinds, now it is time to wash them. Fill a large bucket or tub with warm water or use a washing machine set on a temperature of not more than 30 degrees Celsius.

Add a mild soap or detergent to wash away any stains, and use a scrub or sponge in the case of stubborn stains.

Lay Out Blinds Flat To Dry

After washing vertical blinds sparkling clean, lay them out. Find a spot where you can lay them out on a flat surface instead of hanging them to dry as it can damage their shape. You can also use a hairdryer on a shallow heat setting to quickly dry them or remove any water spot stains.

Hang the Blinds on Head Rail

Once your blinds are completely dry, hang them back on your super clean and beautiful headrail. Take care while hooking them back to the headrail, and soon, you will have your vertical blinds back with a new and refreshing look.

Tips and Tricks for Easy Maintenance

Your blinds, once deep cleaned, can be maintained very easily. Just use a soft brush or cloth or even a feather duster to remove the dust and dirt accumulated on the blinds every once in a while.

You can even use a vacuum cleaner for the same if it has a soft brush attachment to it, starting from top to bottom for ease of maintenance. You can repeat this process on the backside of the vertical blinds, too, and maintain their beauty as they are hanged to the headrail.
